Stair Flooring in Tomball

Every trip up and down lands on the same narrow edges, so a staircase shows wear and shortcuts sooner than the rooms around it. We fit new treads, risers and nosing in hardwood, vinyl, laminate or carpet, measure each step on its own, and put the full scope in writing before we start.

A staircase is its own kind of floor

On a flat room, flooring runs edge to edge. On stairs, every step is a small project with a front edge, a vertical riser, two ends and often a wall or a row of balusters to work around. Treads that look identical are rarely the same depth, so we measure and cut each one individually.

Most stair work we see starts with carpet that has worn thin on the nosing, or a new main floor that now stops awkwardly at the bottom step. We can carry hardwood, luxury vinyl plank or laminate up the stairs to match, or install fresh carpet if that suits the way you use your home.

Before any material is ordered, you get a written scope that lists the number of steps, landings, open ends and trim pieces. If the treads underneath turn out to need work, we tell you what we found and why before it changes anything.

What stair installation includes

  1. 01

    Removing the old covering

We pull carpet, pad, tack strip and staples, or lift old treads where needed. The structure underneath gets checked once it is exposed.

  2. 02

Treads and risers measured per step

Each tread is scribed to its own width and depth so the ends sit tight against walls and stringers. Risers are cut to match, finished to your choice of wood, vinyl or a painted surface.

  3. 03

    Nosing that suits the material

Hardwood stairs get a solid bullnose or a matching nosed tread. Vinyl and laminate use a stair nose piece made for that product, fastened and glued so the front edge stays put under daily traffic.

  4. 04

    Squeak and movement fixes

While the stairs are open, we screw loose treads down to the stringers. A quiet step is far easier to achieve now than after the new surface is on.

  5. 05

    Landings and transitions

Landings are covered to match, and we finish the top and bottom so the staircase meets the hallway and main floor cleanly.

Signs your stairs are ready for new flooring

  • Carpet worn through on the edges

The front edge of each step takes most of the foot traffic. When the pile is flattened or the backing shows, the stairs have become a slip risk.

  • Steps that creak or flex

A tread that moves underfoot usually has a loose fastener or a gap at the stringer. We can correct that as part of the job.

  • A new floor that stops at the stairs

If you have replaced the downstairs floor, carpeted stairs can look out of place. Matching treads tie the two levels together.

  • Loose or lifting stair nose

On older vinyl or laminate stairs, a nose piece that rocks is a trip hazard and should be replaced rather than patched.

How a stair job runs

  1. 1

    Look and measure

We count the steps, measure each tread and riser, and note open sides, balusters and landings. You choose the material and the finish for treads and risers.

  2. 2

    Written scope before work

You receive a written quote listing every step, trim piece and task, so you know exactly what is and is not included.

  3. 3

    Tear-out and prep

We remove the old covering, set any loose treads and check that rise heights stay consistent once the new material goes on. Your home is protected along the path we use.

  4. 4

    Install, fit and clean up

Treads, risers and nosing go in from the bottom up, each one fastened and glued in place. We vacuum the staircase and nearby floors and walk it with you before we leave.

What moves the price of stair flooring

Square footage alone says little about stair work, so a staircase quote counts treads, edges and turns instead. A straight closed staircase is a different job from one with open ends and a turned landing. Your written quote shows each of these factors as its own line, so nothing appears later as an add-on.

Number of steps and landings
More treads mean more cutting and fitting. Landings add area plus extra edges to finish.
Open sides and balusters
An open stringer needs finished returns on the tread ends. Working around balusters takes careful notching at each one.
Material choice
Solid hardwood treads, vinyl or laminate with matching nose pieces, and carpet with pad each carry different material and labor time.
What is underneath
Sound treads can often be capped. Damaged or uneven ones need repair or replacement first, and we show you before quoting it.

Stair flooring questions

Can my stairs match the new floor downstairs?

Usually, yes. For hardwood we use treads in the same species and stain, and for vinyl plank or laminate we use the stair nose made for that product line. A close color match is easiest when both are ordered together.

Will the step heights change after the new treads go on?

They can, especially on the top and bottom steps when carpet comes off and a thicker tread goes on. We measure rise heights during prep and plan the material so the steps stay even, which matters for safe footing.

How long will we be without the stairs?

Most staircases take a day or two depending on the number of steps and the material. We can often keep a path usable during the work, and we will tell you plainly when to stay off fresh adhesive.

Is carpet still a good choice for stairs?

It is quieter and softer underfoot, which many families with small children or pets prefer. We install it with new pad and can wrap each step for a neat, fitted look or run it straight down over the nosing. Our Carpet Installation page covers the options.

How do I get a quote?

Get your quote by phone. We will ask about the number of steps and the material you have in mind, then arrange a visit to measure and give you the scope in writing.
