Vinyl Composition Tile in Tomball

Vinyl composition tile is a hard, inexpensive glue-down floor made for heavy use, and it suits a laundry room, garage workshop or playroom in your home. We flatten the subfloor, set each tile tight and write out the full scope before any work begins.

A Practical Floor for Hard-Working Rooms

VCT is made from limestone filler bound with vinyl resin and pressed into 12-inch squares about an eighth of an inch thick. It shrugs off rolling carts, muddy boots and dropped tools, and a damaged tile can be cut out and replaced on its own. Mixing two or three colors lets you lay a checkerboard, a border or a simple stripe for very little extra material.

It is a different product from luxury vinyl tile. VCT is harder and less cushioned, it is glued down rather than clicked together, and it needs a coat of floor finish to look its best. If you want a softer feel or a wood look, our Luxury Vinyl Tile and Luxury Vinyl Plank pages are a better starting point. If you want durability and easy spot repairs at a modest material cost, VCT is hard to beat.

Before we start, you get a written scope showing the square footage, the prep the subfloor needs and the finish coats included. The number you agree to is the number on the page.

What Your VCT Installation Includes

Removing the old floor
We take up existing carpet, vinyl sheet or loose tile and haul it away. If older 9-inch tiles or black adhesive suggest asbestos, we stop and tell you before anything is disturbed so it can be tested first.
Subfloor flattening
VCT is thin and shows every ridge beneath it. We grind high spots, fill cracks and low areas with patching compound, and skim where needed so the surface is smooth.
Moisture check on concrete
Most homes around Tomball sit on slab foundations, and moisture rising through the concrete can loosen adhesive over time. We test the slab and note the result in your written scope.
Layout and adhesive
We snap center lines so cut tiles at the walls come out even, then spread a clear thin-set adhesive at the right trowel depth and let it tack before laying tile.
Rolling and trim
Each section is rolled with a heavy floor roller to seat the tile in the adhesive. We finish edges with vinyl cove base or reinstall your existing trim.
First finish coats
New VCT arrives with a factory coating that wears quickly. We apply coats of acrylic floor finish so the floor has a protective layer and an even sheen from day one.

Signs VCT Is the Right Call

  • A room that takes real abuse

Garage workshops, mudrooms and utility rooms see grit, chemicals and heavy wheels. VCT handles that wear without the cost of porcelain.

  • Curling or torn sheet vinyl

Old sheet vinyl that has split at the seams or lifted at the edges is a trip hazard and traps dirt underneath.

  • You want spot repairs to be easy

A gouged VCT tile can be heated, pried out and replaced in minutes. We suggest keeping a box of spares for exactly that reason.

  • A pattern on a sensible budget

Checkerboards and borders are simple with 12-inch squares in a few colors, which suits a retro kitchen, a craft room or a kids' play space.

  • Carpet that will not stay clean

Laundry rooms and back entries with carpet tend to stain and smell. A sealed hard floor wipes clean.

What Moves the Price of VCT

VCT tile itself is one of the least expensive flooring materials, so labor and prep make up most of the cost. Your written quote shows each of these factors separately, so you can see where the money goes before you agree to anything.

Subfloor condition

A smooth slab needs little work. Cracked, uneven or adhesive-covered concrete needs grinding and patching, and that is often the largest variable on the job.

Removal of the old floor

Pulling carpet is quick. Scraping glued sheet vinyl or old tile takes longer, and suspected asbestos materials must be tested before removal.

Pattern and layout

A single color laid square is the most efficient. Checkerboards, borders and diagonal layouts mean more cuts and more time.

Room size and shape

Small rooms with many corners, door jambs and appliance cutouts take more labor per square foot than an open garage bay.

Base and finish

New cove base, transition strips and the number of finish coats each get their own line, so nothing is folded into a single lump sum.

How a VCT Job Runs

  1. 1

Measure and look at the subfloor

We measure the room, check the slab or wood subfloor for flatness and moisture, and talk through colors and any pattern you have in mind.

  2. 2

    Written quote

You receive a written scope listing square footage, tile, prep work, trim and finish coats. Anything we cannot know until the old floor is up is named in advance, with how it would be priced.

  3. 3

    Prep day

We protect nearby rooms, remove the old floor and flatten the subfloor. Patching compound needs time to cure, so prep and tile sometimes fall on separate days.

  4. 4

    Tile and roll

Tile goes down from the center lines outward, cuts are fitted at the walls and the whole floor is rolled. Walking on it gently is usually fine by that evening.

  5. 5

    Finish and walk-through

After the adhesive sets we clean the surface, apply finish coats and walk the room with you, explaining how to keep the sheen up with simple care.

VCT Questions We Hear

How is VCT different from luxury vinyl tile?

VCT is a harder, mostly limestone tile that is glued down and needs a floor finish to protect it. Luxury vinyl tile is thicker, softer underfoot and comes with a built-in wear layer, so it needs no finish coats. VCT costs less in material and is easier to spot repair; LVT looks more like stone or wood and is lower maintenance.

What upkeep does a VCT floor need?

Sweep or dust mop regularly and damp mop with a neutral cleaner. Every so often, a fresh coat of floor finish brings back the sheen in traffic lanes. Avoid harsh solvents, which can soften the finish.

Can VCT go in a garage or over a concrete slab?

Yes, and a slab is a common base for it. We test the concrete for moisture first, because excess moisture can break down the adhesive. Hot tires can mark VCT, so in a parking bay we will talk through whether it suits how you use the space.

Will you install VCT over my existing floor?

Usually no. VCT is thin enough that any texture, seam or grout line underneath will show through and can crack the tile. In most rooms we remove the old floor and flatten the subfloor, and the written scope spells that out.

When can we walk on the new floor and move things back in?

Once the tile has been rolled, careful walking is usually fine that evening. Hold off a couple of days before sliding the washer, dryer or a heavy workbench back into place, and keep water off the floor while the adhesive cures. When patching compound has to cure before tile goes down, the schedule we give you will show the extra day.
